An installation by Adrian Piper...
inspired to post this by an article about Adrian Piper in the Metro paper. If I could find the image that struck me I would post it instead. She is in NYC, with help of a henna artist, applying these words to volunteers foreheads. Written in reverse, the message becomes readable when seen through the reflection of a mirror, and the dye is anticipated to endure on the skin for 1- 2 weeks. The participants will be asked keep journals of their experiences and audience reactions during the project, then re-read the journals a year after the performance. Written directly on the forehead the text suggests the layered, shifting organization and loss of memory. It is both a promise and a threat. What will be taken away and what do we consider to be ‘our’ everything. It sounds crazy... but the photograph is pretty amazing. I'll have to scan it.

You can be a part of this today:
Wednesday, MAY 2, 11am- 7pm, NYU
Steinhardt Barney Building, 34 Stuyvesant Street (9th St. betw 3rd and 2nd Aves), Room 101 (Near the Astor stop on the 6 Train)
